However, after a few months, she started to feel restless. She wasnt sure what she wanted to do with her career, and she felt like she was missing out on opportunities by staying at her current job.
One day, she saw an article in the New York Times about a new program at Yale Law School called Law Without Walls. The program allowed students to spend a semester studying abroad at one of several partner universities around the world. Emma applied and was accepted into the program.
Emma Norton suicide squad:
In March of 2016, a suicide squad was organized in Emma Norton School. The squad consisted of five students who had recently been diagnosed with depression. The squads purpose was to support one another and provide a sense of community and hope to one another.
The squad was initiated by Emma Norton School counselor, Ms. Rebecca Goldberg, who had been working with the students for several months prior to the squads formation. Ms. Goldberg stated, The goal is to create a community within the school where these kids feel like they have somebody that they can talk to and rely on.
The squad quickly became a support system for one another, sharing their experiences and helping each other through difficult times. One member of the squad, Sarah, said I dont know what I would do without them… They are my lifeline.
Move to California:
In 2010, Emma Norton moved to San Francisco and started working as a staff attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a nonprofit digital rights group. Emma was excited to be in the heart of the tech industry and to be working on behalf of internet freedom. However, after six years in the Bay Area, Emma has decided to move back to her hometown of Chicago.
The high cost of living in San Francisco has been a major factor in Emmas decision to leave. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is now over $3,000/month, and its not uncommon for people to spend 50% or more of their income on housing costs. In addition, there are very few affordable options for families.
Emma Norton is a senior staff attorney for technology and civil liberties at the ACLU. Emma has been with the ACLU for over 10 years, and has been fighting for the rights of all people to have access to technology and communication tools.
